Aprons, dresses and skirts! Oh My!
Nothing like taking a little time to bang out some clothing for myself. It has been a long time since I really just focussed on making something for me. I have oodles of unused fabric and I’ve decided it’s time to use it or lose it. I may have mentioned before that I have a slight addiction to the remnant rack at the fabric stores. Such great deals, I just can’t resist. Those little scraps of fabric can inspire so many great ideas, and that is where they get lost in the pile, as “ideas”. I must make the ideas come alive! It all started with my great friend Jess’ going away party. She is an amazing, beautiful, and kind individual who is joining the Peace Corps. I admire her huge heart and courage, and look up to her strength and wisdom.
I came to the conclusion that I finally wanted to make a dress from a pattern I had purchased months ago. Normally I don’t do the “pattern” thing. I often have trouble following the directions they way they suggest. I suppose I construct in a different manner and find it almost irritating to do it someone else’s way. But I wanted to take that bull by the horns (sorry, just been to the rodeo recently) and get through making the dress for the party. I left myself plenty of time to make it, about a day and a half, HA! I work much better under pressure. To my surprise I was able to read, understand, and follow directions. I did well with accounting for excess fabric to be cut by the serger and everything came together quite well, except for the fact, that it looks awful on me. Needless to say, I did not wear it to the party. No worries though, I can always throw it up on etsy and see if anyone bites.
Then came the skirt. A lovely floral number from the remnant rack for $3. The plan was to make a nice summery skirt. I was going to put in a zipper for the closure until I realized I didn’t have the color zipper I wanted in my stash. It suddenly dawned on me that I had some elastic. To be honest, I’m not sure I’ve ever made an article of clothing with elastic before. I figured now is as good a time as any. And voila! New skirt. I’m happy with how it came out and it is really comfortable which is always a plus.
Now for the apron. So incase you didn’t know, I do a lot of cooking. I love to cook and bake and anyone who knows how to do these things knows that sometimes, things get a little messy. If my saute is a little too hot I get some oil spatters on my shirt, and pasta sauce seems to jump at me from any direction. If I was smart I would throw on an old tee while cooking and not wear my nice clothes, but my nice clothes are my regular clothes and believe me, between breakfast, lunch and dinner, desserts, and mini meals for Parker, there is no time to be changing clothes. I’ve never worn an apron before, but it has become obvious to me that I’m a bit tired of standing in the laundry room treating stains. My yummy, lovely fabric came from a magical store in Denver called Fancy Tiger. By magical I mean a place that somehow gets me to spend lots of money on my ideas. My friend Whitney and I took a trip there quite a while ago, and even though I’ve been saving this particular fabric for a different project, it’s too beautiful to just let it sit there and do nothing. So an apron is born! Now if I can remember to throw it on at all times in the kitchen, I shall save myself some time in the laundry department. Bonus.
